@Media 2007

Well, already the plans for @Media 2007 are being announced. For a start it’s going to be bigger than last year, as it’s being held in three different continents – yes, unlike An Event Apart which I don’t believe has made it as far as Europe yet, Vivabit’s @Media gig will be heading America and Asia next year, as well as their regular London gig, which was bloody good last time.

This is therefore a message to my American readers:

Howdy! Have a nice day y’all. Go to @Media 2007. It may be full of Goddamn Communists and Pinko subversives, but it’s such a top-notch conference you’ll be saying “Gee Whizz, how come I didn’t go to the UK ones last time!”

Well, I say for the benefit of, when of course what I really mean is “to play up the American stereotype as far as possible to try and aggravate Mike Cherim” which obviously takes a lot of doing because he’s such a placid, laid back guy. He’s such an all round decent chap I’d even consider buying him a drink. He’d still have to sort out his own air fare though…

This is a message to everyone. Click on the image! Go on, click on it. You could win me a wee. Well, it’s pronounced wee — at least by me — but it’s actually the Nintendo Wii games console and frankly I like free stuff. So go on, clicketty clicketty. Tell your friends to come and click too (and read up on the conference while they’re on).

The teaser currently available just lists a few of the people who will be speaking at each, despite the fact that the @Media bods say that the dates, venues and most of the speakers have been tied down — so why aren’t you telling us who the other speakers are?

I know you’re saying you don’t want to spoil the surprise, but frankly it’s going to be hard to get work to pay for me to go again, unless it’s absolutely vital. So therefore I want you to make it incredibly cheap in the hope that they’ll let me go again or I can afford to go off my own bat. Or even put the prices up for everyone but me and slip me a pair of complimentary tickets out of the proceeds. No? Oh well, no harm in asking…

Anyway, hopefully by the time the @Media conference wheels around again we’ll be a little bit further forward with WCAG 2.0 — I’d like to think that by this stage if it it’s not yet a formal recommendation then it’s a long way down the line towards it. After all, while most web professionals know accessibility ought to be on the agenda, not everyone is knowledgable in the field and I think it would be great to see a piece on WCAG 2.0 in there — maybe even a double header between someone who’s contributed to its development and someone else who has been critical of it? On the other hand, it is obviously something I’m interested in, given my own time looking at it, but I do think it would be helpful to others too, particularly as I think by then it’ll either be live or nearly live. So come on Vivabit, whaddya say?
