From the Beeb:

Police in Jamaica have launched a murder investigation into the death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer.

Following the results of a post mortem examination, police said Mr Woolmer had died of asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation.

BBC News

That’s shit. I mean, I know Pakistan are out of the Cricket World Cup following two straight defeats, but still… lighten up a bit, you know?

Although this news has been leaking out slowly via the radio for much of today, to be honest — early radio reports suggesting a bone in his neck was broken. From my voracious reading of crime novels, I’d bet that’s that hyoid bone thingummy…

Fractures of the hyoid bone are known to occur in 17-71% of fatalities following manual strangulationJournal of Clinical Forensic Medicine, Dec 1995

See. I told you. That hyoid thingummy. Or as Wikipedia would have it:

Due to its position, the hyoid bone is not usually easy to fracture in most situations … In cases of suspicious death, a fractured hyoid is a strong sign of strangulation.Wikipedia

Like I said before, shit. It will rightly cast a long shadow over what remains of Cricket’s World Cup. It’s a sad day for cricket, and a sad day for sport in general. Sport is meant to provide enjoyment. Yes, I know that’s a Newcastle fan saying that, but you know wht I mean. For the families of Bob Woolmer and Andreas Escobar, sport wasn’t worth the heacy price they have been forced to pay.

So, Ladies and Gentlemen: next time you’re out, raise a glass to Bob.

Looks like there has been an argument between Woolmer & some of his team members upon the loss to Ireland. And then some exchanges of punches. And then Woolmer got killed.

Hmm… I’ve got to say that seems just a tad speculative. I’m not drawing any inferences at this stage, I’ll just let the police forces get on with it…
