Cheats Sometimes Prosper

So, despite the fact that Carlos Tevez played a part in 26 of West Ham United’s 38 Premiership games this season, when, according to Premiership rules, he wasn’t eligible to play for them, and scored 7 goals which directly led to West Ham gaining 5 league points (and that’s excluding assists etc). (Stats from Hammers Mad).

Because they fielded an inelegible player, West Ham avoided relegation by 3 points. However, instead of being deducted points, they were simply fined. At £5.5 million it was a rather hefty fine, but when you consider that simply staying in the Premiership could be worth anything up to £50 million, it seems rather miserly.

Is this fair? Is this fair to the other teams in the Premiership who fielded only players they had legitimately signed?

Of course it isn’t. Does this mean that Chelsea could illegally sign six players, and win the title with a £33 million fine? If not, why not? After all, you can’t have one law for one club and one for another…

If you wish, you can directly contact the Premier League to register your opinion on the decision. I’d urge other fans and believers in fair play to do the same.
