Foreign Language Day

…no, this isn’t the cue for some sort of set of racist jokes about how “all them foreigners talk funny, don’t they”, it’s an idea for a blog post.

Basically, the idea is to write a blog post for Sunday 1st June — about whatever it is I would fancy writing about in a particular day — but to write the entirety of the post in a different language. It doesn’t have to be a long post. It just has to be in a foreign language (and not provided via one of them automatic translation thingummies). If it’s any consolation to the anyone reading this who is absolutely terrified by the idea, I can assure you that my foreign language skills are at a similar, if not lower, level.

I can vaguely remember a few German words, and I can remember more in French, but other than explaining how I go to school when it is raining, or to explain to someone that I am not a fitted carpet (why I ever thought that was likely to crop up in conversation, I’m not sure)

Je ne suis pas une moquette

Anyway, if anyone thinks that they fancy the challenge, let me know… I’ll keep a list of anyone who fancies trying it!

Je pense que c’est une bonne idée. Je vais essayer.

  2. Steve responds:

I’ll be passing on this one. Apart from a few Klingon phrases, I’m useless at languages.

  3. Christophe from little Belgium who is learning Mandarin responds:

    Dutch:
Heel grappig. Alleen engelstaligen kunnen zoiets bedenken. Voor miljoenen andere inernetgebruikers is het elke dag “vreemde talendag”.

    English:
Very funny. Only native speakers of English could come up with this. For millions of other netizens, every day is “foreign language day”.

    German:
Sehr witzig. Nur Englischsprachige können sich so etwas ausdenken. Für Millionen andere Netzbürger ist jeder Tag Fremdsprachentag.

    French:
Drôle d’idée. Seuls les anglophones peuvent inventer une initiative comme celle ci. Pour des millions d’autres netizens, chaque jour est “jour des langues étrangères”.

(I’ve run out of foreign languages from secondary school. My Spanish is too rusty. My Mandarin isn’t good enough yet.)

  4. Andy Mabbett responds:

Yeah, but it only counts if you use LANG and HREFLANG attributes, correctly and appropriately.

  5. Christophe from little Belgium responds:

The Anggarrgoon blog has a nice story to encourage you to learn foreign languages:

Two guys meet by chance across a chasm. One of the guys shouts a question in Oowini across the gap. The other doesn’t answer, because he doesn’t speak that language. He yells back something in a different language, which the Oowini guy doesn’t know. Then they both turn into stone.
