Of Aliens & Abominable Snowmen

Some oddments from the meedja this week…

Firstly, it appears Edgar Mitchell, former astronaut and one of the few people to have walked on the moon, believes that we are being visited by aliens:

Apollo 14 astronaut Dr Edgar Mitchell, said he was aware of many UFO visits to Earth during his career with NASA but each one was covered up.

Dr Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview that sources at the space agency who had had contact with aliens described the beings as ‘little people who look strange to us.’

Daily Mail

It’s not that I don’t believe it’s possible for aliens to have visited earth, I just don’t believe that any sufficiently advanced civilisation capable of journeying through interstellar space in such a way as avoid the problems of travelling sub-light speed (the fact that it’s effectively a one-way trip, as by the time you get back, everyone will be dead) or super-light (the fact that your mass increases to infinity at light speed, so you’d need an infinite amount of energy) would be content with talking to George W. Bush…

…and for that matter I tend to think that if our governments were sufficiently competent to be able to keep a secret of this nature for 60 years (bear in mind the scientists etc who would need to be involved), I believe they would be able to do a better job of running their countries.

It’s not that I don’t think our governments would want to have massive conspiracies, if they felt that it was in their best interests… it’s just that I don’t think they would be sufficiently competent to pull it off…

And then, of course, there’s the Yeti.

Scientists in the UK who have examined hairs claimed to belong to a yeti in India say that an initial series of tests have proved inconclusive. Ape expert Ian Redmond says the hairs bear a “startling resemblance” to similar hairs collected by Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary[...]

Mr Marak says the hairs may provide compelling evidence of the existence of a black and grey ape-like animal which stands about 3m (nearly 10ft) tall.

BBC News

Of course, I know better. I remember it being proved that the Yeti were in fact giant robots, but that’s beside the point.

We’ve got ‘aliens do exist’ and ‘we might have found proof of the abominable snowman’ all in the same week. What next? Is Nessie going to come tap-dancing out of Loch Ness singing ‘Donald, whaurs yer troosers?’

I can’t help being just a tad cynical that all of this is coming out in the build up to the next X-files film… the truth is out there maybe. But then again, that’s exactly what they would want me to think, isn’t it?
