No Entry For Heavy Goods Vehicles
Sorry to point this one out to those of you who may already have seen this, but…
…when Swansea Council needed to put up a sign in English and Welsh to say “No Entry For Heavy Goods Vehicles. Residential Site Only”, they needed to get the appropriate phrase translated into Welsh also.
What went up on the sign was Nid wyf yn y swyddfa ar hyn o bryd. Anfonwch unrhyw waith i’w gyfieithu.
Unfortunately, it turns out that this means was not, as the Swansea Council officers had believed, a translation of the text they had emailed. Instead, it reads: “I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated”.
See the BBC News article for more details and a photograph of the sign in question, as well as other tales of things ‘lost in translation’.
