Palin – Africa is a country?

Apparently, Sarah Palin thought Africa was a country.

Then again, knowing that she believed humans and dinosaurs co-existed*, and she believed in witches didn’t seem to stop her. Perhaps more worrying for someone who wanted to be vice-president was that she was offered preparatory notes and advice for an interview; she didn’t take the time to do so, and she cocked up the interview because she didn’t have the information at her disposal that the team had already worked out.

In other words, maybe it’s not so bad if you start out with poor knowledge as long as you show good judgement and a willingness to listen to the people with better knowledge than yourself. Which she seemed to be unwilling to do.

To me, that’s more worrying. “President Palin, we need to prepare you for a meeting with the Russian Premier”. “Oh, I can’t be bothered, I’ll just wing it…”. Then again, it sounds frightening, but how far is that from the WMD issue?

* Obviously, she’s watched One Million Years BC and presumed it was on The History Channel.

That’s not too bad: based on the poor geography knowledge of Dubya Bush before his election, I thought the USA were another planet! ;-)

I’ve read more than one commentator saying we haven’t seen the last of Sarah Palin, and that she’ll be back. Not a comforting thought. I found the prospect of her as Vice President – or even President, if McCain had won and then had some kind of health crisis – quite scary.

We used to think the Republicans couldn’t come up with anyone worse than Ronald Reagan. Then came Dubya, and then there was Palin. Is there no-one high up in that party who thinks that political expertise and competence are more important qualities for the rulers of their country than a populist image?
