It's a great book which explains in laymans terms and with great humour and wit how medicine and scientific knowledge should be obtained. It's a pretty long rant about competency and I especially liked the test about fish oils being good for student concentration which was advertised long before the results were even known. They were even going into the project with pre-existing expectations which was bound to influence the final outcome. Hmmmm, some bad planning going and control methods going on there!

The battle against bad science, pseudo-science and irrational belief systems goes on...

If you are interested in attitudes and misunderstandings about science, you may also be interested in "How to Think Straight about Psychology" by Keith Stanovich. Many of Stanovich's comments apply to science generally, not just psychology.

Placebos are a curious/powerful thing. Did you know that addiction to placebos was already reported in scientific journals in 1969?
