No, it’s not actually making the BNP illegal: it’s just making their comstitution illegal. They will no longer be able to bar non-white people from membership. That’s not banning the BNP; that’s banning discrimination.

I have no problem with that. I can’t imagine (beyond the likely ‘someone testing the law’) many non-whites would actually want to join the BNP anyway…

@Jack Whereas I would not be in favour of PR because it would lead to a weak government (well OK we already have one) if 8% of the people, which is a sizeable minority, agree with their viewpoint is it not right that they receive at least some representation. Where do we draw the line, it is OK to ignore the views of 20% of the population because 50% of the population find them abhorrent. The current system is nothing more than dictatorship by the majority.

@Theresa Personally I think likening incitement to child porn really weakens your argument, I do not know anyone who thinks child porn is anything other than abhorrent, but many people, myself included to a large degree, think freedom of speech is very very important.

Yes personally I have huge problems with the vast majority of what the BNP stand for, but I think they have every right to say it, and any further restrictions on our right to free speech only goes to strengthen the position of parties such as the BNP.

This sums up my thoughts on the reason why the BNP have done well

I’m with you on this one Jack.
People tend to bang on and on about how wonderful democracy is (and how we should ensure it adopted globally by hook or by crook), until it stops working for them.
After that, you may as well be throwing sour grapes as throwing eggs.
Eggs probably hurt a bit more though.

Over here (AU) there’s a system of formally fining those who don’t vote. Maybe it’s time to bring that into force in the UK, and penalise the real abusers of the democratic right to vote (ie those that don’t exercise that right).

I’ll reiterate: I have no objection to the protest; it’s the throwing things I object to. A right to protest does not, in my mind, include throwing things at people…

The BNP highlight the problem with PR (that smaller parties/extremist groups get more of a say); but the first past the post system is not without its problems either – you could achieve more than 50% of the vote nationally but still end up being in opposition, for example.

Look at the English Democrat in Doncaster. That wasn’t PR…

However, I guess that while we may have different approaches, we’re still broadly on the same side
