Citizenship Test #FAIL
The Powers That Be™ have produced an official UK Citizenship Practice Test to see if you’re knowledgeable enough about the UK to be able to become a UK citizen. Unfortunately, there are one or two problems with it: someone a little more unkind than me (oh, okay, me) might wish to dub it the ‘Citizenshit Test’.
A few of us on twitter have taken the test, and despite being British by birth, none of us actually passed. This is likely for two reasons: firstly, we don’t actually feel that in order to be a productive British Citizen that we need to know in which year in the 19th Century did women win the right to divorce their husbands (indeed, Bruce has come up with a list of more relevant questions).
The second reason is more important. It’s because the test itself is shit.
For example, it asked me the question:
In which two of the following places does the European parliament meet?
- London
- Strasbourg
- Paris
UK Citizenship Practice Test
Hmm… well, I was fairly confident that it met in Strasbourg, but I thought Brussels was also involved somewhere. Oh well, I’ll go for “London”, since it is a UK Citizenship test after all…
D? What do you mean D? If you’re going to have D as one of the correct answers, don’t you think it’s a little unfair if you don’t actually give that one to me as something to select from? Unless of course it’s part of the government’s secret plan to reduce immigration…
But of course answer D does exist under certain conditions. Firstly, you have to be the sort of person that The Powers That Be™ would like to see become a British Citizen. And secondly, you need to be using a large screen resolution with a maximised window, in order to make Answer D show up. If you’re using a laptop, or you don’t have the window maximised, answer D disappears. Which is an example of rather crap design. You’d think that they might have actually wanted to test the damn thing… particularly since this isn’t the only question that has this problem.
Oh, and I failed. But so did the design…
