Another Spam Selection

As it’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve updated my site, my spam filters have been doing their usual job of allowing pretty much all the non-spam comments to get through unmoderated (with a couple of exceptions, which I’ll come to in my next post); immediately recognising about 90% of the spam and dumping it straight in my spam bin, and leaving the other 10% or so in the moderation queue.

I’ve been impressed. Out of several hundred comments, no spam comments made it onto the site, and no genuine comments got thrown into the spam bin, although there was a mixture of both genuine and spam in the moderation queue.

I hadn’t been going to do another spam selection, but when I saw this one in my spam bin I just thought it was so damn cheeky I had to give it a mention…

Hi, I’m novice here. Your forum is full of usefull information. But I can’t undestand, what is wrong with my messages –when previewing it I see some URLs that leeds to adult pages.

Yes, sites seem to be very intersing, but I’ll better use google to find such a sites.
Could you please advice me how to recover the problem. Maybe it’s a virus? Or maybe it’s a feature of your forums?

Please, do not delete my message. Maybe you advice me something and it will help others if they have the same trouble.

[followed by about 40 porn related links]StephBehag

Well Steph, it’s not a feature of my forums. Particularly since I don’t have any forums, I have a blog. But it’s not a feature of my blog either. No genuine poster has ever complained of that problem when commenting, but I’m guessing that’s because no genuine commenter has ever deliberately included 40 or so porn links as part of their comment before.

Oh, and a little tip: if you want to appear genuine, it probably helps if you don’t attempt to post the same comment, word for word, on six different blog postings.

Next up, it’s Yupiter:

if you don’t want resive this message plz mail me [email address listed followed by multiple links about ringtones]Yupiter6

Or I could just block your IP address, instead of giving you my email address for you to send more spam too. And while I’m on, I might as well add the word ‘ringtone’ to my spam blacklist…

Hi all! Where find bad girls? G’nightBunterMedic

Well, if you’re looking for the inmates of HMP Larkhall, you might want to try the official Bad Girls website. If, as I suspect, that’s not what you’re looking for, you might want to get in touch with StephBehag, as I think he can probably point you in the right direction…

And that brings me finally to Mr. Interesting:

I’ve just been staying at home waiting for something to happen. I haven’t gotten much done lately. My life’s been completely bland lately, but so it goes. Not much on my mind these days.spainish-translation

Well, if your life is really that dull, what makes you think I’d want to know about it? And why on earth, if your life is that dull, do you think I’d be interested in Spanish translation services? To translate your otherwise drab monotonous existence into a drab monotonous Spanish existence?

Here endeth the lesson.

How do you block IP addresses? My wife uses WordPress with akismet, but it doesn’t seem to have that option. Is it part of Spam Karma or a different plugin?

It’s part of standard WordPress (not sure if it needs to be on your own host though) or via a plug in!

Basically, just go to Options, then the Discussion tab, and then type the IP addresses you want to blacklist into the ‘Comment Blacklist’ box.

But the plug in Spam Karma 2 has a much more configurable IP blacklisting/whitelisting routine…
