Films I’ve Not Seeny Memey
Have you ever had one of those conversations where someone mentions some sort of film reference, and you stare at them blankly? No? Well maybe you’re a film buff then.
I’m not. Nor am I a literature buff. I like to read fiction and I like to watch films because I want to be entertained. That doesn’t mean I can’t watch a more ‘worthy’ film from time to time, but it does tend to mean that I avoid the depressing stuff like ‘Nil By Mouth’ unless I can’t help it. I generally want to com out of the cinema feeling happier.
But I am perfectly aware of my own ignorance as regards ‘film’. There’s a lot of films I supposedly should have seen that I haven’t (or at least haven’t watched all the way through). Here’s ten of them — the ones that normally have people saying “really? you haven’t seen that?” as if it’s nearly impossible to have existed without watching ‘em…
If you’re feeling ‘memey’, feel free to produce your own list.
- Citizen Kane
- The Maltese Falcon
- Blade Runner
- Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventure
- Planet of The Apes (any of ‘em)
- Monsters, Inc.
- North By Northwest, Vertigo and Rear Window
- Gone With The Wind
- Total Recall
- Scarface
Hello. I am
Really?? You haven’t seen Blade Runner ?
I think I may have made up for and several other people not having seen Blade Runner. AJ got the DVD boxset for his birthday and since then we’ve watched all five different “cuts” plus the three and a half hour Making-Of. And there’s one disc we haven’t even looked at yet…
I’m afraid I’ve watched so many movies that the only ones that come up very often that I haven’t watched are ones I’ve actively avoided, usually because of anticipated violence - things like the Clockwork Orange, which was a great book, and I love Stanley Kubrick, but it’s got such a reputation I think I may be better off without it.
I’m rather cinematically challenged too, much to the infuriation of one of my colleagues who will be mention some filmic reference and an actor and I will just say “who?”
Monster’s Inc is a must though - I still think it’s the best of the Pixar films, but I am in a minority as all the polls and everyone says Finding Nemo is the best, which I thought was below average.
I have also seen NbyNW (but only a couple of months ago), but none of the others on your list either.
I watched Blade Runner for a class a couple quarters ago, and while it was a perfectly good movie, I found myself completely pissed off the entire time because it was sooo dark — I mean literally dark (not like depressing). I kept shifting where I was looking from, changed seats, and that classroom was completely dark, but I was seriously so angry ’cause I couldn’t see what the hell was going on! But I could definitely see its merit as a film.
