ThePickards Moves Hosts

Well, to be more specific about it, my lovely hosting company Titan Internet have informed me (some time ago) that owing to blah blah blah, something or other, they’re moving me from one server to another at some point between the 14th and 16th of December. So I’m not moving server, or hosting company, it’s my server itself that’s moving…

Downtime is expected to be between 2 and 4 hours per server. And it’s due to take place between 11pm and 7am, so shouldn’t interfere with most people browsing in the UK (except the ones who are night owls).

So thanks again Titan. I understand that you’ve got to move from one data centre to another: you’ve not only given me a when; you’ve also given me a why, and you’ve arranged for the server move to cause the absolute minimum of disruption. And that’s why I like Titan. That sort of service and consideration seems to come as standard.

As opposed to one of my hosts who recently shifted several of my client sites without a word. In the process, they upgraded to PHP5, also without a word. Every one of these sites uses PHP includes and the pages are parsed with .htaccess.

It would have been nice to know so that I could have modified the commands in advance. Instead I woke up one morning to a stream of phone calls from clients informing me that their headings, nav bars and footers had gone missing.

The host’s comment when asked why they didn’t warn anyone? It was a security issue and they didn’t have time. Rubbish. The first server migration had taken place two weeks earlier and caused others the same problem.

I shall be moving the whole lot to another host with a similar ethos to yours as soon as these accounts are due for renewal.
