It’s only a few weeks until the new football season starts.
As yet, Newcastle have signed only two players: Jonas Gutierrez and Danny Guthrie. Now I have no objection to signing either of these players, but given Mark Viduka’s injury problems and chronic lack of fitness, and considering how Newcastle’s good start and good finish to the season coincided with Viduka being fit (I’m not saying that was the only reason, but I think it was a factor), then I think we are in desperate need of a target man.
So the club’s continual lack of investment in the playing squad is somewhat concerning. I expect to be beaten to the punch in the transfer market by clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, but everyone else we should be able to compete with. Instead Manchester City and Portsmouth are both splashing out more than £10 million on one player, and insisting that they want to improve their squad further, when Newcastle have spent about tuppence and seem to be scaling down our transfer goals (“six new faces” to “one or two defenders”).
It’s not good enough. I don’t know where the blame lies:
- Ashley, for not providing the necessary financial backing
- Keegan, for failing to inspire targets to join the club
- Wise, for failing to get pretty much anyone on Keegan’s hit-list
…but there is a problem. And the club will continue to go backwards without investment (although if Duff can return to the player he was when he left Blackburn, rather than the shadow of his former self that we’ve had for the last two years, that would certainly help. Meanwhile, maybe someone could remind Smithy where the net is?).
We need a target man, a left back, a centre back (ideally who can play right-back at a push), a central midfielder, and ideally another target man or all-round striker. And it’s about time those in charge of bringing players in pulled their bloody fingers out and got on with it…
