Mary Ann Nichols, the first canonical victim of Jack the Ripper (as depending on who you believe, earlier murders were ascribed to the same killer) was found brutally murdered in Whitechapel.
Unlike the deaths caused by powerful natural forces, the victims of Jack the Ripper were deliberately murdered by a person or persons unknown. I suspect the unknown is the main reason that Jack the Ripper continues to interest people today — if the killer had been caught in 1889, would there have been as much interest ? — no — and so everyone is able to discuss their own ‘pet’ theory.
(Although one of the potential suspects was taken into custody in December 1888 as it happens, but I discussed that last year).
But when people consider the Jack the Ripper murders, remember that it’s not a romantic gothic mystery. Remember that a number of people were brutally murdered, probably died in considerable agony, and had their bodies mutilated. There’s nothing in the least romantic about that.
