…no, not that one, the other one. Ebeneezer Scrooge. He’s traditionally seen as someone who is a real spoilsport. Someone who will spoil the fun — particularly at Christmas — and is more concerned about money and working than about the joyous Christmastide (or whatever).
And then there’s Victor Meldrew. Victor is a grumpy old soul, with life generally conspiring against him and an oft-repeated catchphrase of “I don’t believe it”.
I’d just like to point out, that despite the evidence that is soon to appear to the contrary, I am neither of these people.
However, I would also like to point out that it’s still bleeding October. We’ve not had all the Halloween nonsense over and done with yet; we’ve not had Guy Fawkes Night yet … can’t you even wait until the start of November before working yourself up to another frenzy where you have to buy, buy, buy, buy everything because it’s Christmas and it’s for the kiddies, eh?
So I was a little narked by seeing all of the Christmas decorations in the Metro Centre when it seemed so buggeringly early, and it’s like the whole retail market just rolls from one festival to the next — not out of any particular desire to celebrate it, just to flog more crap to the punters — and the incessant refrain of “buy things!!” gets a bit annoying after a while.
Although obviously if there are any kiddies watching, I’d like to point out that any references to ‘buying things’ are entirely coincidental. Santa makes the toys. It’s just that shops put up lots of decorations to remind us he’ll be coming soon. Yes, that’s it…
Now, I love Christmas. It’s the ultimate festival: it’s celebrated by mostly everyone, it’s a time for people being nice to one another (mostly), it’s about giving, and for a large proportion of people celebrating it, it has virtually nothing to do with religion at all. It’s the ultimate festival: you can have it religious or secular, however you prefer, and nobody seems to mind, as they are all too busy being nice to one another.
But please, please, please … let’s not start it in October, okay?
