419, closer to home
It’s obvious that my email address is doing the rounds, thanks to the W3C as I got some more spam today.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I write only to seek your indulgence and assistance. My name is Alfred Atkins, an executive staff of a bank in Scotland, United Kingdom.
There is a deal of a transfer involving a huge amount.I am proposing to make this transfer to a designated bank account of your choice. For your indulgence and support(morally, financially etc.), you will have 45% share of the total amount after the transfer must have been successfully concluded.
Kindly reply me stating your interest, or call +4470xxxxxxs and I shall furnish you with the details and necessary proceedure with which to make the transfer. I anxiously await your response.

My very first clue that it was spam was the poor usage of English from someone claiming to be working in a Scottish bank. Al Atkins is apparently “an executive staff”. Is this a wooden one? Or is he seeking to imply that he’s the entire executive of the bank? Also the Atkins, Al is not a normal way of signing off letters in the UK.
Interestingly, searching for Al Atkins, bank and scotland on google returns no results. Presumably this is the bank that dare not speak its name?
Thirdly, the telephone number given is +4470 which is usually used as a redirector to obscure the fact the callee isn’t in Europe.
Fourthly, because running it through the spam-scam-o-meter highlights, as if I didn’t already know that it looks like a scam spam.
And obviously most convincingly, because an email purporting to be a bank is offering moral support. I know they all claim to offer financial support, but I’ve never heard of one having the cheek to offer moral support before.
Sigh. Time to update my spam filters, I guess. I just hope it stops flooding in before I feel the need to change my email address.
Please, in order to save everyone’s time, can you not just set these sort of emails to have the subject title “419 type email scam attempt#46″ and then I can configure my spam filters more easily?
