Malware is still a bad thing
My earlier post on Stop Badware said that I was applauding them for their darned good idea in providing a place where people can report malware, spyware and all sorts of associated crap, even if there wasn’t much on their site at the time. However, since they dropped off my radar almost immediately, I’d not heard of them again until today. Whereupon I realised they’d come a long way.
Google has started warning users if they are about to visit a webpage that could harm their computer.
The warnings will be seen by anyone using the search engine who clicks on a link to a site identified as harmful by the Stop Badware coalition.
Google, PC maker Lenovo and Sun set up this initiative in January 2006 to identify dangerous software and the websites that try to trick people into installing these malicious programs.
So, congratulations, kiddos. Given that pretty much, ooh, everyone seems to use Google, if this anti-malware is built into their search engine, it’ll help prevent you from bouncing directly to it. You’ve really grown up, and you’re going to be a real asset to the online community. I’m prouda ya, son.
Having said that, the really simple rule is not to download stuff from sites you don’t trust. Always ask yourself “what’s in it for them?”. If there isn’t an obvious answer, chances are you’re not being told the whole story. Be careful out there: stop, look and listen before you attempt to cross the information superhighway.
