Slumming It
I’m sure by now you have heard of the film, Slumdog Millionaire. For a start, I mentioned it in my post Slumdog Review, where I described a review of it given by an un-named source.
It has also been nominated for ten Oscars, eleven BAFTAs, has already won five Critics’ Choice Awards, four Golden Globes and most probably a partridge in a pear tree. It has also been reviewed by the Langster. Furthermore, I haven’t seen it, so you won’t be getting a film review here.
Nope, what you are getting is a book review.
Yes, I’ve read the novel Slumdog Millionaire by Vikas Swarup (originally published as Q&A), and I’m going to offer some thoughts on it.
The blurb on the back tells the basic story: Ram Mohammad Thomas has just won one billion rupees in an Indian quiz show (a bit like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, only with 12 questions and only two ‘lifeboats’ instead of lifelines), only he’s put in prison because they think he must have cheated. The question is how could a kid from the slums have possibly known the answers to these questions?
And the book, I imagine like the film, sets out to answer this question.
If you’ve seen the film, you will have noticed therefore that not only has the character’s name changed, but so has his family status — Salim is a close, brother-like friend, but not an actual brother, and I’m sure there have been other tweaks.
The book opens with Ram in jail, being somewhat brutally tortured in order to confess exactly how he has cheated. I suspect that the torture is rather more brutal in the book than in the film, as it’s certainly unpleasant:
Every half-hour or so he comes up with a new instrument of torture. First he inserted a wooden rod into my anus. With chilli powder smeared on itSlumdog Millionaire
Yowch. But our hero is then rescued from the jail by someone who says they will represent him as his lawyer, only he must promise to tell her the whole truth about the quiz show and how he knew the answers.
The tale is then told — and I believe this is like the film — in a series of flashbacks, with each part of the story being told from a different part of his young life, during which he has become imparted with a bit of information which, at the end of the chapter, forms the basis for that round’s question. One question per chapter.
As a plot device it works quite well, although I think it would have been more suspenseful if — and I’m guessing they will have done this in the film — he gets asked the question then has the flashback, rather than describing the flashback then being asked the question. I also thought I had recognised the device from Starter for Ten, only when I went back to check, while this does open each chapter with a question from University Challenge, it’s more as decoration than integrated into the plot.
One the one hand, it’s a tale of grinding poverty and desperation: so many people, so many stories, so much violence, so much exploitation (particularly sexual exploitation), but mostly so many uncaring people. But it’s probably unfair to use the ‘uncaring’ label: it’s probably more that they have their own problems so that they are far too busy worrying about those to help anyone else.
However, it is probably true to say that with the exception of a few main characters, the rest of the bunch are fairly unsympathetic. This doesn’t mean that they are uninteresting, although they probably aren’t fleshed out enough to my satisfaction — all to frequently it seems to be a case of “Ram lives with someone; Ram discovers person’s guilty secret; Ram discovers information for the quiz; Ram moves on after person gets comeuppance in some way”. Stephen Lang’s review of the film suggests this is because he feels Boyle can be lazy with characterisation, but in my opinion he could just be sticking closely to the book…
It’s a bit simplistic in this regard. As a feelgood book, it probably does its job very well. Only for me a number of the chapters, which while dealing with very different people and different issues — prostitution, fading movie stars and rabies — seem all to fit the “Ram lives with A, Ram discovers A’s secret, Ram finds information…” pattern.
That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the book, merely that I felt that this aspect of it could — and should — have been done better. There was also another aspect to the book that I wasn’t so fond of, but equally I think I’m being unfair to mention it, as it sort of fits the genre.
The genre here is I think one of “poor kid makes good”. My problem with it is the characters Ram encounters: I find it difficult to believe that it is conceivably possible that one orphan boy could, by simply bouncing around, have happened upon the collection of characters that he claims to. Indeed, for large parts of the book, I was questioning whether Ram was a fantasist, rewriting his own past to account for how he’d known the answers to certain questions.
For most of the story this seemed to be left open as an intriguing possibility, only for this door to be closed in the climax where some of the events are corroborated, suggesting that this remarkable tale is indeed true. Shame. I personally liked the idea of Ram as a Walter Mitty character.
However, like I say, this series of unlikely events which leads to the triumph of the hero is not an uncommon device in this sort of story (and indeed also fits a lot of Bollywood genre conventions). It also seems rather “Illogical, Captain” for me to be critical of the book for these reasons while quite happily enjoying fiction with hobbits, trolls, spaceships, wizards, vampires and other mythical beings.
I think the difference is to do with the suspension of disbelief: if I accept the notion that vampires are real, and the rest of the plot then hangs together plausibly, it works for me. However, with Slumdog Millionaire, where I have to suspend my disbelief is the series of coincidences which lead to Ram encountering such a wide variety of unlikely characters. And for some reason, I have trouble suspending my disbelief there.
Nevertheless, as I say, dramatic coincidences are pretty much a Bollywood convention, so I don’t really wish to hold that against the novel (even though I think a Walter Mitty-cum P.J. Maybe version of Ram would have been more fun).
For me, the love interest is a little too… well, she’s like the Doctor’s assistants used to be, you know? She’s just really there to be rescued. And forgive me, but I like my women to offer a little more than that.
It’s also fair to point out that there were things which I thought worked very well. Lance Naik (retd) Balwant Singh’s chapter, ‘A Soldier’s Tale’, tells a story very well. It’s a story I have heard in various guises multiple times, and reminded me somewhat of a different variation, as told by Gunther Hahn in Ennis & Dillon’s excellent Preacher series of graphic novels. Sure, I knew what was coming in this chapter, but the tale was still told very well.
But for all that back and forth over different bits of it, it’s an enjoyable book. I read it in one sitting (a little over three hours for 350 pages, but as I’ve said before, I do read quickly) You can get caught up in the story very quickly, and once you’ve spent some time flashing backwards and forwards in Ram’s life, the jigsaw pieces come close to forming a complete and cohesive narrative. If you can suspend your disbelief around the unlikeliness of some of the meetings, and you don’t mind most characters other than Ram not really being given enough time to develop (although again, this isn’t so much because they are poorly written, it’s just that potentially very interesting characters are written in and then out again in the same chapter), and you want a feelgood book, you’ll enjoy it.
But it’s probably a bit Bollywood for me. I’m off to find something with vampires, elves, or at the very least a hard-bitten semi-alcoholic detective who is always in trouble with his superiors, but still gets results, oh and by the way who is incapable of forming meaningful relationships because he takes his work home with him. Genre conventions I can live with … when it’s the sort of genre I genre-ally enjoy.
Only I’m now even more keen to see the film than I was before.

The lawyer character isn’t in the movie, and the realtime events of the film take place in a very quick, and unbelievable, amount of time.
But that’s cinema, and it’s also Danny Boyle, who can’t really sit still for too long and seems to want to outdo himself on memorable openings. So the nasty torture intercut with a quiz show at the beginning works in this respect. A more mainstream Hollywood director might have moved the setting to LA and introduced somebody like Glenn Close as the lawyer character but that would been perhaps a duller and more “talky” film.
